As
co-creator of these drums my journey in the making has been
expansive and continues to deepen. My working background is
of carpentry and creating with wood. Over the last five or
so years I have found myself wood carving and really connecting
to creating in this way. This happens through a process of
spending time with pieces before starting to work with them.
Some times there can be little actual carving happening, though
a piece can also involve much working, I really have found
a joyful connection within this.
This is how it is for me when making drum frames, spending
time feeling the connection to the wood before working.
I was drawn to start with Ash, which is very strong yet, flexible.
The qualities I felt are strength and depth. It is also beautiful
wood to work with and it has a strong resonance.
I feel strongly that the wood ideally should come from this
land as do the hides that we use. To consciously be using
native woods is a very connective part of the making process
for me.
I have also made some frames out of Cedar which is incredibly
light in both weight and energetically, it is also a very
soft and fragrant wood to work with.
I am now experimenting with different woods and experiencing
what they have to share. I am currently in the process of
making circular frames and am excited to see what gifts this
may bring.
I feel all wood has many qualities both physically and energetically,
through working with them I get to know these qualities, to
feel them, which is such a gift and a blessing.
As I get to know and feel myself too..
My wish is that you may you find, with the help of one of
our drums connection with the rootedness of the trees, the
wildness of deer, and the expansiveness of the human spirit.
