I
started making Ceremonial Hand drums around the millennium
(2000) for my own personal use and healings. Since that time
I have learnt the skills necessary in my belief system in
singing to the animal spirit if I may have permission to use
their bodies in the creation of sacred instruments and objects.
Many times I am told that they would like to be buried or
left in a quiet place in a forest. This practice is very old
and is the Way of many traditional people on our planet still
today. It may seem a little strange in our western world of
plastic drums and buying equipment made by machines in factories.
This is not the case with Sacred Way Drums or any of the rattles,
drum sticks, fans, ceremonial requests etc that I create.
The
natural world that we are all part of and connected to is
what our instruments are made of and come from. They carry
the Spirit of nature and the wild. The skins that are used
for our drums come from our local wild roe and highland red
deer. They live in the woodlands and in the hills and valleys
of NE Scotland. They are not farmed animals behind fences.
We can see on their skins a story of their lives. Every skin
is different just like the difference between you and me.
We are both humans but carry and experience different lives.
That is the same as the deer and the wood used for the drum
frames. Some skins are almost translucent and very clear.
Others have healed scars from fights in the herd and many
different patterns. I love seeing what will show itself once
all the de hairing process and drying has taken place. This
is all done by my own hand and takes time. These instruments
are like 'slow food'. They take time and are honoured in their
coming together. I believe like the taste of food prepared
with quality ingredients, care and time taken over it, its
worth the wait.
I
love what I do and now in 2012 with my friend Richard who
has a wonderful connection to wood we have started sharing
our skills and creating these drums for you. May you to find
peace and happiness when you connect to your drum and it connects
to you.
