Graeme 'Bug' Stephen
Guitar
Graeme Stephen was born 1974 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He
began playing the guitar at a very early age. He studied
music in Aberdeen before going onto the Berklee College
of Music for a time in 1996.
Graeme's playing draws on many influences and musical
genres. Through playing with players from both jazz and
world music backgrounds he has gained a broad spectrum
of sounds. In 2003 he was awarded a grant from the Arts
Council of Scotland to compose and perform new music with
a group of talented performers. This music drew on influences
ranging from world musics to free jazz and modern classical
forms.
Featuring some of Scotland's best improvisers, including
Fraser Fifield, Stuart Ritchie, Ben Davis, Vicki Fifield
and Dick lee.
The Scottish Arts Council has recently giving Graeme a
budget to record an album with his current trio which
features the talents of Stuart Ritchie on drums and New
York based double bassist Eivind Opsvik. This group has
been performing since 2003 playing festivals around Scotland
including the
Edinburgh international jazz fest , Glasgow and Aberdeen.
The music for this trio is written by Graeme taking influence
from jazz and world forms.
Other projects underway include Graemes sextet of Violin,
Sop sax, Alto Sax, Guitar, Double bass and drums.
This group features some wonderful improvisers including
Martin Kershaw , Chris Stout and Mario Caribe.
Based in Edinburgh Graeme continues his development as
a creative musician playing with a wide range of like
minded musicians. Some of his recent performances have
included The Regensburg Jazz Fest, Glasgow Jazz Fest,
Edinburgh Jazz Fest, Aberdeen Jazz Fest.
Graemes playing is often likened to John Abercrombie,Bill
Frsell , Scofield and Mcglaughlin but he takes influence
from a wide range of sounds and genres and amalgamates
a unique tapestry of sound.

Born in Cairo, Egypt. Since the age of 9, Aly played the
frame drums and Egyptian Tabla. By the age of 14, he took
up the drum-set which he continued to play on and off for
the last 29 years. However, his passion always remained
with his percussive Middle Eastern heritage.
He performed and recorded with some of Egypt¹s top
artists including Mohamed Muneer, Mohamed Fouad and Omar
Khirat.
He is currently involved with singer songwriter Danny Young,
the Pictones and various Jazz artists in Edinburgh and always

Stu Ritchie
Drums
Born in Aberdeen, Stuart began his professional career
(after one lesson with a local teacher who recommended
him) with a celebrated local country-dance act, the Desperate
Danz Band, before helping to establish the legendary Hotlips/Drift
Inn blues-jam sessions that thrived in the city during
the late 1980s. Relocating to Edinburgh, he became a member
of popular alternative outfit Papa's Magic Beard, as well
as a key player in the cutting-edge underground scene
centred on the cult Transporter Room club.
With his
talents increasingly in demand both north and south of
the Border, Stuart moved between London and Scotland for
several years before making the UK capital his main base,
to explore further the vibrant London scene. He since
worked with numerous rising stars of the London jazz scene,
and has been involved with artists and projects as diverse
as Primal Scream, Jim Mullen, Pete King, Dylan Bates,
Gilad Atzmon, the Catford Devils, Veryan Weston, Nick
of Time and Holly Penfield. One particularly amusing partnership
which is now in its 15th year is with the eccentric Somerset
based Dr Tom Harwood, who at any time will perform using
vocals, trombone, keyboards, theremin and bass guitar.
Their most recent outings have gone under the moniker
"Ethecres and Delgratos".
Early in 2003 Stuart was invited to play with Fraser Fifield,
who takes a highly individual approach to Scottish/jazz/world
music, and they have just finished recording an album
also featuring the wonderful guitar player Graham Stephen.
In addition to this, Stuart has found himself playing
with many visiting musicians from the US and Europe, including
Dave Gibson, Loren Stillman, Roy Powell, Jesse Davis and
Eivind Opsvik (along with Graham Stephen), and eagerly
anticipates a soon-to-be-realised collaboration with Julian
Arguelles and NYC guitarist Ben Monder. These collaborations
have been realised through the progressive programming
of Edinburgh based promoters Assembly Direct.
Another musician
with whom Stuart has a number of projects running concurrently
is piano/keyboard maverick Paul Harrison. Together they
are joined by brilliant altoist Martin Kershaw in the
"most dangerous band in Scottish jazz" Trianglehead.
Another group to enjoy the pairing of Stuart and Paul
is the organ trio Organ Scandal, with Glasgow based guitarist
Graeme Scott. They have just recorded an album of Graeme¹s
music, which also features double bass prodigy Aidan O'Donnell.
More recently Stuart has recorded for German label ACT
with BBC "album of the year" winner Colin Steele,
and Nov 2004 sees UK drummer magazine Rhythm publishing
a feature on Stuart.
